Oh, Mothers!

When we imagine a Mother, the image always emerges associated with a mixture of divinity and humanity.

It is very uncommon to find a person who is not moved by the memory of his/her Mother.

Children who have abandoned their homes, for whatever reason, and now live homeless, on the
streets, upon remembering their Mothers, are overtaken by a wave of tenderness.

Why are Mothers such special beings?

Maybe it is because they have the gift of resignation...

A Mother is able to relinquish her own interests to care for this defenceless and needy little being she carries in her arms.

But Mothers also have other very special qualities.

A Mother's heart is compassionate.

A Mother always finds a way to help her child, even when the father's vigilance is severe.

She softens the punishments, hides the mischiefs, defends, protects, obtains a few extra coins.

Yes, when it comes to helping a son, a Mother always has a little money put away, even when she lives with extreme necessity.

Mothers are excellent bodyguards.

They are always alert to defend their children from the bully who wants to pull their hair, or force them to lend their favourite toy...

When a child has a nightmare in the middle of the night, and fear terrifies, it is the Mother who runs to assist.

Mothers are part fairies, because a Mother's hug heals any suffering, and their kiss is a saintly remedy against pain...

Even when children have grown, their Mother's prayers continue to have the power to remove all difficulties, resolve any problem, avert all evil.

In a child's understanding, Mothers have a direct liason with God, because everything they ask for, God heeds.

Respect for Mothers persists even in places where hope has fled.

In places where the police cannot enter, Mothers have free access, even if only to twist the ears of a son who has strayed from the straight path.

Even a bandit respects his mother and treats her image with reverence when she has departed this life.

Some Mothers are true sculptresses.

They know how to extract from the unhewn stone they have been given, the most beautiful sculptures, working with the chisel of love and the crucible of tenderness.

Oh, Mothers!

Fairies, and at the same time a bit like witches...

They can guess things about their children that these would prefer to hide from themselves.

They know when children want to escape their commitments, invent excuses and try to deceive with their false stories...

Children forget that they lived for nine moths in their Mothers' womb, and that is why they know them so well.

Oh, Mothers!

Mothers are special creatures that God endowed with a bit of each virtue, to take care of other creatures, no less special, that are their children.

Mothers have unriddled that their mission is the most important on the face of the Earth, because theirs are the arms that God has entrusted to deposit His jewels, to become even more sparkling.

Maybe that is why God endowed Mothers with sensibility, valour, courage and resignation, self-sacrifice, boldness, affection and fortitude.

All these are stregths that they need to accomplish the great mission of being a Mother.

And to be a Mother means to be a partner with God in creating life, and to have the opportunity to build a better world with those precious stones called sons...
